Come Be the Change You Wish to See in the World
On Change the World day at the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways, residents of all ages can have fun while making a big difference

April 3, 2014 (Rockaway, NJ) -- Youth and adults across Northern New Jersey are invited to come "be the change you wish to see in the world" at the fifth annual Change the World day hosted by the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways. This year's event will be part of the A Future with Hope Mission Fund Campaign, which benefits local church mission projects (Rockaway Food Closet, CUMAC ECHO, animal shelters in Morris/Sussex/Warren Counties), No More Malaria, and A Future with Hope, Inc. (an organization dedicated to rebuilding homes destroyed by Superstorm Sandy).

The United Methodist Church of the Rockaways is located at 1 Hoagland Avenue, across from Parks Lake in Rockaway Borough. Change the World will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 10 am - 3 pm.

Come test your taste buds at the annual Crock-Pot Chili Cook-Off and Best Brownies Bake-Off. With chili from restaurants throughout the county and brownie recipes contributed from some of our area's best Girl Scouts, the event is one of the most affordable, most tummy satisfying Taste of Morris County events around. There's plenty of other food to choose from, too -- hot dogs, pulled pork, popcorn, and shaved ice. Lunch is all part of the fun!

Thinking of others is a core part of this event, so come for lunch, but bring a food item to donate to the Rockaway Food Closet. Serving 130 families in Rockaway Borough, the Rockaway Food Closet regularly needs cereal, canned fruit and beans, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, boxed pastas, rice, tomato sauce, soup, coffee and tea, canned tuna, macaroni and cheese, and brown paper bags.

Before or after lunch, there are lots of activities to keep you busy. Youth, especially, will enjoy the arts and crafts area, where they will meet Rivet, the builder ant, and get to build something of their own with help from the experts, Boy Scout Troop 56 of Denville. Youth can also participate in the Fitness Free Throw, with coaching provided to maximize the number of balls they get through the basketball hoop. They'll also get to try their hands at making loop band bracelets to benefit No More Malaria and Future with Hope, with help by Brownie, Junior, and Cadette level Girl Scout Troops from Rockaway and Randolph. Parents and youth will enjoy performances by Denville Dance Arts Center and other groups.

Again, come to have fun, but bring something along. Bring a clothing item to donate to the Community Closet at CUMAC ECHO in Paterson. The Community Closet provides clothing and household items free of charge to victims of domestic violence, house fire, natural or other disaster in order to lessen the financial burden of their circumstance. All gently used clothing items and shoes are accepted.

Change the World seeks to Feed, Heal, and Rescue individuals, families, and animals on a local, regional, and global level. If animals touch your heart deeply, consider adopting a new friend on Change the World day or bringing a pet item. Towels, bedding, food, toys, pet friendly cleaning supplies, and cardboard boxes are needed.

The Blood Center of New Jersey will also be on-site. Winter conditions have impacted donations, and blood supply is critically low. Anyone age 16 or older can now donate blood and provide life-saving transfusions to patients in NJ hospitals.

The United Methodist Church of the Rockaways is delighted to host Change the World and the Future of Hope Mission Fund Campaign. Each year, it is our opportunity to bring together community-minded groups throughout Morris County to "Be the Change You Wish to See in the World" and provide service on a local, regional, and global level. If your group is interested in being a part of the event, contact Pastor Lyssette Perez at (973) 627-2989 or
